Films
A Films Group has been established, which will now meet at 7.30pm on the first THURSDAY of each month in the Lovelace Room in EHVH. The first meeting was in September 2011, with the classic film Casablanca, and the intention is to show a variety of different types of film, chosen by the Group members.
If you are interested in joining please contact Margaret Faulkner (282267) with your film preferences.
New members are welcome!
Details of the planned 2012 meetings are as follows:
Thursday 5th Jan "Monsier Hulot's Holiday" 1953 France 114 mins comedy d. Jaques Tati.
Join lovable, gauche M. Hulot (Tati) on an unforgettably funny seaside holiday at the modest resort of Saint Marc sur Mer where he accidentally (but good naturedly) causes havoc. Finely acted, meticulously directed and observed and so appealing because he loves what he finds funny.
Thursday 2nd Feb "The Chess Players" 1977 India 129 mins d. Satyajit Ray. Cast: Richard Attenborough & 2 very good Indian actors.
A gentle ironic comedy set in 19th century India at the time of the Seige of Lucknow in 1856. Two nawabs play interminable games of chess as their domestic environment crumbles around them and a king is so absorbed in his aesthetic interests he is not aware of the threat to his territory fom British expansionism.
Thursday 1st March "Titfield Thunderbolt" 1952 GB 84 mins d. Charles Crichton. Cast: Stanley Holloway, Sid James.
A traditional Ealing comedy and parochial values as clergy and gentry band together to save their local branch line from British Rail cuts by taking it over themselves and acquiring an engine from the local museum. Douglas Slocombe's photography casts a romantic glow.
Thursday 5th April "Wild Strawberries" 1957 Sweden 94 mins bw d. Ingmar Bergman. Cast: Victor Sjostrom.
One of Bergman's warmest films, this concerns an elderly Professor making a journey to collect a University award and on the way he relives his past by means of dreams, imaginings and encounters with others. Some richly observed characters, good acting and a feeling for the delights of nature and being young.
