RECORDING THE HORSLEY CHURCHYARDS
Some 25 years ago Pam Bowley and the WI embarked on a project to record all the graves in St Mary's churchyard. Unfortunately enthusiasm waned and the project came to a halt, but Pam kept the records of what had been done and now the U3A Local History Group has taken up the work.
We are planning the positions of all the graves and then recording details of each grave – are they headstones, crosses, brick barrels, etc – and deciphering the inscriptions – not easy on the older graves. The records are being computerised, with the aim of eventually making them available online, possibly through the Horsley U3A website or perhaps the Surrey History Centre's Exploring Surrey's Past website.
We have now got a system going and would welcome new members – no experience necessary! If you fancy a few hours a week in pleasant surroundings – once instructed you can pick your own time – then contact Jo Simms: jo_simms@hotmail.com or 01483 283922.
This is a long-term project and we don't want it to fizzle out again. When we have finished St Mary's, we shall start on St Martin's. So please come and give us a hand.
